About the Venue
The Deacon is an urban getaway and event space with a 100+ year legacy of celebration, community, and inspiration.
The Deacon is located within the Former First African Baptist Church, a gothic revival-style church built in 1906. For more than 110 years, the church was a hub for the Black community and the South Philadelphia neighborhood once known as Moyamensing.
Famous Black magicians John Armstrong and Ellen Armstrong once performed in this space in the early 1900s. I’m honored to host a show here.
This space is not wheelchair accessible, and will require attendees to walk up a flight of stairs to enter. Chairs will be provided on the landings of the staircase to ease entry.
